The Whitetail deer is the number one dig game animal in the United States. Because Whitetail Deer are
are very elusive type of animal, they test all the skills of the hunter. Their ability to elude hunters mainly comes from
their abilities to hide, keen senses, and the very extensive knowledge of their territory. The Whitetail deer's main defense
against hunters is their excellent sense of smell, their acute hearing, and their eyesight. Although the Whitetail deer sight
is not very keen, but they are able to detect the slightest movement.
The Whitetail deer sometimes elude the hunter by staying motionless and letting the hunter walk right by them. They can quickly
find their escape route or patch of cover due to the familiarity with the surroundings. The Whitetail deer will notice any change
in their environment. Due to this ability, if you intend to use a stand or blind, set it up months in advance, because deer will
avoid these areas for several days before becoming accustomed to it. This will give the deer time to add it into their envirnment.
The Whitetail deer usually avoids danger by "sneaking" away unnoticed by the hunter. If the deer becomes alarmed, they may snort
loudly and stamp their huffs. This snorting and stamping alarms other deer in the area of the presence of danger. When the deer
feels that the danger is great, they will usually flee with their tails erect. When this occurs, the Whitetail deer will only run
a short distance before stopping and checking to see if they are being pursued. The Whitetail deer can attain speeds up to 35 miles
per hour for these short distances, and can jump high barriers like fences. The Whitetail deer is also a very good swimmer and will
also use water as an escape route if neccessary.
