Facts about Whitetail Deer Habitat:
- Whitetail deer require an abundant food supply, consisting of broad leaf plants
and grasses. In the winter, they eat browse, crop residue, and nuts
- Need a good source of water
- Deer need heavy cover. They use it to elude hunters and protect them from the elements
- The densest deer populations are found where there is edge habitat(the zone between
two different types of habitat)
- Young forest are ideal for deer. Old forests are not
- Bucks spend most of their lives in home range of about 1000 acres. Doe, about 600 acres
- Adult deer stay on the same home range from year to year. It is almost impossible for
hunters to force deer out of their home ranges
Hardwood Forests:
Provides food and cover. The younger forests are the best because sunlight
can penetrate the canopy to grow shrubs and grasses
Farmlands
These areas offer abundant food supplies. This is the "edge" habitat. They have
many stream corridors and brushy areas. Usually, they are adjacent to forests
Lowlands
Swamps, marshes, river bottoms and bogs are usually surrounded by fields and
woodlands
